What is Shrink Plastic?

Shrink plastic is a crafting material that you can draw or print on, then heat to shrink and thicken the design, turning it into cute miniature jewelry or decorative items.

During manufacturing, the plastic’s polymer chains are rapidly cooled to maintain a thin sheet. When reheated, these molecules contract, causing the plastic to shrink and become thicker. One of the most fun parts is watching the plastic curl, shrink, and flatten again in the oven!

How to Use:

Prepare Your Design:

  • Draw, print, or stamp your desired image onto the plastic sheet
  • Since the sheet is thin and slightly transparent, it’s great for tracing designs
  • Keep in mind: the final product will shrink to about 30% of the original size

Recommended Coloring Materials:

  • Colored pencils (lightly sand the surface first for better color adhesion)
  • Acrylic paint (apply a thin, even layer to avoid uneven texture after baking)
  • Pastels (non-oil type) – good for soft effects like tint and ombre
  • Alcohol-based markers (black is commonly used for outlining)

Materials to Avoid:

  • Watercolors
  • Oil-based markers
  • Crayons (they melt during heating)

Shrinking Methods:

1. Oven (Recommended):

  • Bake at 160°C for 3–5 minutes
  • Do not leave unattended during baking
  • Use baking/parchment paper to line the tray
  • The process is complete when the plastic becomes flat, smaller, and thicker
  • Remove quickly and press flat with a heavy object until fully cooled
  • Smaller pieces will shrink faster

2. Heat Gun (300W):

  • Alternative option, but requires caution due to high heat
  • The airflow may blow the plastic away, so secure it properly
  • Best for small pieces

3. Hair Dryer:

  • May shrink very thin plastic, but not powerful enough for thicker sheets
  • Not recommended due to low effectiveness

4. Microwave:

  • Not suitable, as microwaves heat food differently and won’t shrink the plastic properly

5. Direct Flame:

  • Will burn and blacken the plastic
  • Do NOT use under any circumstances
